Dear friend who wants a bigger Bench Press,
I’m going to ask you a few questions,
Be honest with me as you answer…
I want to know…
…do you need to improve your Bench Press TECHNIQUE… in order to get stronger and toavoid future injuries?
…have you ever trained your Bench, even though your shoulders, pecs, elbows or wrists were causing you PAIN?
…have you ever suffered an injury whilst Benching, or as a result of the Bench Press training you were doing?
…have you ever trained really hard for a competition and then ended up “under-performing” on the day?
…do you feel that if your MIND was stronger you’d be a better Bench Presser?
If you are anything like I was when I first started Bench Pressing you will have answered “YES” to a few of those questions.
I want you to know that their are many other lifters and athletes out there who are experiencing similar problems with their Bench Press. So you are not alone.
And the good news is…
There is hope and I’m going to explain why, right now…
“How I Added More Than 137.5lbs To My Bench Press In Under 6 Months… ”
My name is Andy Bolton and many of the World’s best strength athletes and strength coaches agree that I am one of the strongest men who has ever lived.
I competed in Strongman for several years, but my true love is Powerlifting… and it is in Powerlifting that I have achieved the most success.
I am a 7 time WPC World Champion, a 2 time Arnold Classic WPO Champion and a National Champion more times than I can remember…
…One of only a handful of men to Squat over 1200lbs, the former world record hold in the total and the first man to ever Deadlift 1000lbs.
However,
I have always had a weak link. My Bench Press.
I am built for the Deadlift. I have long arms and this makes me very suited to pulling.
But the very same thing (my long arms), has always made the Bench Press a tough lift for me to do well in.
For many years I struggled with the Bench and in late 2010 I decided I had had enough. I had hit a PR of 312.5kg several years ago and hadn’t come close to this number since. In fact, I’d been struggling to Bench more than 280kg for a couple of years.
And It wasn’t because I hadn’t tried.
I had tried EVERYTHING and many coaches and great lifters had offered me their advice. I tried Benching once a week, twice a week, heavy, light, high volume, low volume, with bands and chains. You name it, I tried it.
And I was still stuck.
But then the miracle arrived, everything fell into place and I started to make sensational progress…
With the help of legendary Bencher and Bench Press Coach Bill Crawford, I went from struggling to Bench 280kg… to pressing 342.5kg (754lbs) on March 26th 2011.
That represents a gain of more than 137.5lbs on my Bench Press in less than 6 months!
I have lousy leverages for the Bench and for 20 years it proved to be a nightmare for me. Then I found the right technique and the right plan and all of a sudden my Bench shot up.
I will be forever grateful for the way Bill Crawford helped me out.
And I’d like to share a few of my discoveries about the Bench Press with you right now:
“3 Things You Must Do In Order To Build A Big Bench… ”
Keys To A Big Bench #1: Master Your Technique
If you want to Bench Big… technique is the most important thing that you must work on.
Great technique will let you reach your strength potential and help you to AVOID injuries. Poor technique will do the opposite.
I have seen lifters add over 50 pounds to their Bench in one session, simply by making technical improvments. There is no faster way to add pounds to your press than to make your form better.
With that said, here’s a few things for you to think about, with regards to your Bench Press technique:
Get as tight as possible before you un-rack the bar… The tighter you are, the more force you will be able to generate. Most people just lay on the Bench and perform their presses with no thought whatsoever. The end result is that they end up doing sloppy reps and have average pressing power. Tighten up and you will become STRONGER – immediately
You should have 3 points of contact with the Bench when you press. These are your head, your upper back and your Glutes. If your lower back is touching the Bench you are not set up correctly and this will be costing you pounds on the bar. Get your Glutes tight and your Upper Back arched. When you are set-up correctly, your training partner should be able to fit his hand between your lower back and the Bench.
You must use your LEGS during the Bench Press. Some of the World’s very best Bench specialists told me that their leg drive accounted for upto 300 pounds of their press. They were pressing around 1000lbs, so that basically means that their leg drive was 30% of their press. It’s my experience that almost everybody can learn to better use their leg drive on the Bench Press. And that almost definitely means you too. A better leg drive will add pounds to your press very quickly.
Keys To A Big Bench #2: Build A Bullet-Proof Mind-Set
You can have the strongest body in the world, but if your mind is WEAK you’ll crumble during competition and/or when attempting new personal bests in the gym.
When I really started to figure out what worked on the Bench Press I realised that my mind-set was not as good as it could be. I watched videos of my Deadlifts and I looked like anunstoppable force. Does this mean that I was successful on every attempt? No. But I had no doubt in my mind as I approached the bar.
However, when I watched my Bench Press videos I saw a different man. I didn’t look as confident and I didn’t feel it. Sure enough, when I analysed my thought process for both the Deadlift and the Bench Press… I came to the conclusion that I was “weak minded” regarding the Bench.
Sorting this out was what enabled me to express my true strength in the heat of competition and Bench 342.5kg.
To develop a bullet-proof mind-set, work on the following things:
Have no fear and attack the weights like your life depends on it
If you miss a lift… forget about it. DO NOT dwell on past failures, only focus on future success
Harness the power of VISUALISATION – picture yourself succeeding with a new personal best weight over and over again in your mind. If you do this often enough and with enough intensity, you will find that when the time comes to actually do the lift for real… you will feel like you have already done it and it won’t be so much of a big deal
Keys To A Big Bench #3: Work On Your Unique Weaknesses
The old saying that “you are only as strong as your weakest link”… is TRUE.
The key to improving your Bench Press is to work on your weaknesses . If you are very strong off the chest, but weak at lockout… do some board presses. In contrast, if your lockout is powerful, but you struggle off the chest… focus on full range pressing movements.
Here are some movements to help with specific weaknesses:
If you are very strong at lockout, but weak off the chest, try the following exercises: Bench Press, Incline Bench Press, Decline Bench press, Flat DB Press, Ultra Wide Bench Presses
If you are strong off the chest, but need to improve your lockout, focus on these movements: Board Presses, Bench Presses against bands or chains, Bench Press using the Hanging Band Method, Pin Presses
If you are very strong, but lacking speed – do speed work (try 6 to 8 triples with 50 to 60% of your max)
If you are very explosive, but INCONSISTENT with max weights… you need more heavy doubles, singles and max effort work
I have just shared with you some of the main things that I worked on to improve my Bench Press and that you must work on to improve your pressing power…
…And I’ve included everything you need to know about mastering your Bench Press technique and building a bullet-proof mind-set, in my book: “Explode Your Bench”
Here’s some more information about “Explode Your Bench”:
“What Is Explode-Your-Bench And What’s In It?”
Explode Your Bench is an e-book. That means that when you grab a copy you won’t have to pay any shipping charges and the book will be available for you to download immediately after you have paid for it – Nice.
I have included the very best of what I know about the Bench Press and everything you need to know in order to improve your Bench Press Technique and develop an awesome mind-set.
Most lifters fail to work on technique and their mind-set and by doing so they are setting themselves up for failure. By getting a copy of “Explode Your Bench” and applying what you learn, you are gaining a massive advantage over your training partners and rivals.
The information is presented in a very easy to understand way and a very logical order.
Many books focus on Program design and pay little attention to technique and mind-set. I have done the opposite with Explode Your Bench, because I know that technical improvements were the most important factor in taking my Bench to the next level.
My training partners find the same is true with their Bench Presses and my clients say the same as well. When they all started focusing on their Bench technique… there numbers shot up and their aches and pains reduced or disappeared.
It’s a win win situation.
All you have to do is get yourself a copy of “Explode Your Bench”, apply the information and enjoy a bigger Bench.
